MTY Functional Movement Assessment

MTY Functional Movement Assessment

Functional Movement Assessment (FMA) is introduced in MTY as a non-deterministic method for assessing stress response on and off the yoga mat. The FMA is a specific method in an algorithmic format that allows for streamlining clinical decision-making when used with a vector analysis. The four components of the vector analysis are:

  1. Optimal kinematics
  2. Efficient motor patterning
  3. Response to imposed stressors
  4. Tissue extensibility and sensorimotor integration.

For a full explanation of each, it is recommended you read Chapter 5 which outlines the FMA in full and offers introductory explanations of how to complete functional assessment which seamlessly segues into intervention and management. Diagnosis, when necessary, can also be completed as part of using the FMA. The FMA is offered in two formats – an adult form and geriatric short-form.

Level I Certification will prepare you to use the FMA in the clinic and in group classes.

You can get starting reviewing the FMA in chapter 5 of the MTY text.
