A true passion of mine is to educate and empower the community to take charge of their health and well-being. My vision is to share the blissful union of physiotherapy and yoga for rehabilitation, injury prevention, and optimal health and well-being. I have done so through individual treatment with clients and with developing a small group therapeutic yoga class series based off of the MTY FMA and the PYT Model. I compiled handouts for the class series properly referenced as per PYTI guidelines and shared numerous educational references to supplement the PYT Class Series (Therapeutic Yoga Class Series). Samples of the class handouts have been uploaded for reference and review. Every series offering I have provided one karma registration to an individual with limited financial resources, as a donation to community outreach projects, to a friend or family member in desperate need of self-care and respite, or a random selection from my current caseload. This participant was provided a spot in the series at no cost and had full access to all resources. Class Series Breakdown: Class One: Introduction to equipment, purpose of practice and series, and welcome to our/their gracious space. Focus on the connection of our breath to gentle movement and finding our spinal neutral position. Asana (pose) sereies: diaphragmatic breath, spinal neutral with yoga couch, knee to chest, hip telescoping, windshield wipers, introduction to TA activation and TATD Breath Class Two: Review of DB, TA activation and TATD. Introduce hip mobility and strengthening Class Three: Continuation of breath awareness. TATD breath. Shoulder complex and thoracic mobility. Prone poses: scapular stability strengthening. Class Four: Continuation of scapular stability. Arm spirals. Progress to 4-point poses. Down Dog Prep. Downward Facing Dog. Standing posture (mountain pose). Class Five: Hip mobility. Lunges. Progression in 4 point poses: glute, scapular stability, and core strengthening. Resources: mindfulness practice. Class Six: Review of DDP and DDD. Introduce plank. Standing poses: mountain, chair, warrior 1, warrior 2. Class Seven and Eight: Standing poses. Putting it all together. Review of different breath practices. Resources provided to participants: - Class handout. - Education resources: TA training, Improve sleep, Mudras handout, Chakra handout, Marma massage, Pain education brochure, and anti-inflammatory diet resources. Opportunity provided to each participant to have an individual assessment with myself for a complete FMA and review of goals for class.
The therapeutic yoga class series is consistently evolving as I gain more confidence, and add to my knowledge toolbox with continuing education. I found the FMA very helpful with organizing and developing therapeutic yoga classes. I became more comfortable with the FMA and I now use it consistently in my assessment process. I am honoured to be offering this series within my community and I have seen great success with linking physiotherapy with yoga. The class series has been empowering to many participants and has helped many develop their own therapeutic home yoga practice. ** I am thankful for the colleagues who developed handouts of the asanas from the manuals to be used as patient resources. They were a huge asset to the therapeutic yoga class series. The participants appreciated the handouts as it was a great visual and reference for them as they build their home practice. Thank you again Ginger for providing me the ability to utilize content from the manuals for mudra, marma point massage and chakra handouts for the participants.
