2018

In April 2018, I served as a team leader/mentor for 3rd year DPT students from UNC on a service learning trip to Antigua, Guatemala. As part of our service, we collaborate with the therapy staff at Las Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro, a residential facility for people with disabilities across the lifespan. We were asked to deliver inservices for the staff and among the requests for this year's topics were low back pain and yoga. I delivered a 1-hour, spanish-language inservice to the staff at Las Obras (approximately 20 therapists) as well as the students and leadership team from UNC. The inservice was to serve as an introduction to yoga for self-care and included both lecture and lab (assisted by a medical interpreter).

The staff at Las Obras are hard-working and dedicated to caring for their patients, from infant to geriatric. However, it is common for a therapist to perform multiple dependent lifts of adult patients without lift equipment and sometimes without a second person to assist. They frequently complain of low back pain, not surprisingly. I emphasized TATD breath technique in the lab portion of the inservice as a way to stabilize during heavy lifting. The participants were able to return demonstrate understanding and ability to engage TATD within the lab but will likely require further practice to implement within their day to day activities. I was pleasantly surprised that "yoga" was one of their topic requests for the inservices and they were enthusiastic participants during the lecture and lab. I hope to return in the future and potentially expand on this inservice.
