Applying Medical Therapeutic Yoga to the High Level Neuro Patient

2017
I had the opportunity to offer a 6 hour continuing education class through the Arizona OT association, (ArizOTA) on November 14, 2015. Utilizing PYT slides provided by Dr. Ginger Garner, I provided the background for medical therapeutic yoga and education on the biopsychosocial model. I included the PYT precepts and an in depth presentation of the importance of evaluating the breath and teaching abdominal and TATD breath. The participants were instructed in the set up of the "yoga coach" and completed A-D breathing exercises and meditation. We then progressed to basic poses as introduced in the FMA incorporating TATD breath. Modifications and safety were addressed for every pose and the participants partnered up to evaluate and cue each other through the poses. The class ended with a 45 minute yoga class incorporating the breathing and poses introduced during the class. Each participant was provided with a bound booklet which included the PYT slides, FMA, PYT Volume I Home Program Exercise sheets and a reflective paper on the Science of Breath written by this PYT-candidate. 13 participants completed the course for CEU's; they were charged a small fee to cover the cost of the yoga blankets and lunch. A small sum was of money was left over and donated to the Arizona OT Association as they were extremely helpful in marketing for the course.
By providing a CEU course to other Arizona OT's, I was able to gain a much stronger understanding of medical therapeutic yoga and how I am able to incorporate it into my practice for both orthopedic hand therapy patients and neurologically impaired patients. I believe that by instructing this course I gained the confidence to further pursue my goals of teaching. Early in 2016 I began my journey by guest lecturing and assisting with labs for the OTD program through Northern Arizona University at their Phoenix location. I provided multiple in-services through my employer, Honor Health, on yoga therapy and treatment of patients with Osteoporosis. In July, 2016 I accepted a position as Assistant Professor at A.T. Still University in their OT department. In the 8 months that I have been teaching at A.T. Still I have been able to incorporate many of the fundamental precepts of PYT into my lectures and labs. I am involved in multiple practice immersion classes that lend themselves to incorporating assessment through the lense of the BPS model. I continue to gain more understanding of this model of assessment and the importance of allostasis through breath. It is my goal to offer another CEU class through ArizOTA in 2017 or early 2018 and feel that I will be much more qualified to share PYT with my additional teaching experience and continued study and practice of therapeutic yoga.
