The purpose of this presentation was to define what MTY is, how I use it in my clinical setting, and how to apply pranayama and asana in our practices. This was presented to physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, neuropsychologists, and administrative staff.
I presented my CCC to my fellow co-workers at Rehab Without Walls, who specifically work with the neurological population. Originally, I had planned to present MTY at my yoga studio for safety in prenatal yoga. However, it had to be cancelled due to low number of participants. Apparently it was not the season to be pregnant. ☺
Rehab Without Walls most commonly serves clients traumatic and acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury, multi-trauma, and neuromuscular disorders. The clinicians who I presented to consisted of occupational, physical, and speech therapists, along with neuropsychologists and clinical coordinators/managers. One of the occupational therapists has a spinal cord injury herself.
The only opportunity that I had to present my CCC was at our staff meeting. Due to the amount on the agenda, I was limited to 10 minutes. Therefore, the presentation had to be shorter and quicker than I desired. I wanted to present something that was interesting and applicable. I knew that many of the therapists use some yoga postures with clients, but many mainly used more traditional exercise and training. I decided to put together a presentation briefly explaining what MTY was, its applicability to our setting, and then a review of some postures and modifications to those postures that can be used with our clients. I used pictures from Ginger’s texts and presentations.
The response from the audience was great. They had many questions, and all disciplines were intrigued. Many of the neuropsychologist teach meditation to help with stress, depression, and anxiety. The occupational and physical therapists focus on self-care, activities of daily living, mobility, and transfers to name a few. The speech therapists focus on cognitive and motor aspects of communication. ALL of these elements are present in MTY approach to rehabilitation, and I greatly emphasized this in my presentation.
I enjoyed presenting my CCC because it was applicable to all disciplines present, not just physical therapy. I truly believe that we can because a better multidisciplinary team if we adopt MTY’s bio-psycho-social model to healthcare rather than the biomedical model. Even though the presentation had to be brief, my co-workers texted me shortly after stating they had already been using some of the content presented, and found it very effective with their clients!
