OA Case Study

Suzanne Lowe

PT, MPT, PYT

An estimated 43.1 million Americans of all ages report having arthritis, and of these an estimated 7.8 million report that arthritis limits their daily activities in some way, according to the Centers for Disease control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. (30) This article discusses one case study and the role that a combination of physical therapy and yoga therapy played in the rehabilitation of a patient with chronic pain, specifically osteoarthritis (OA). The positive outcome of this study strengthens the case for successfully managing chronic pain conditions such as OA with yoga therapy. The purpose of this article is 1) to encourage western health care practitioners to embrace and incorporate the tremendous therapeutic benefits of yoga with their patients, 2) to encourage yoga therapists to reach out to other health care practitioners whose patients would benefit from yoga, and 3) to highlight how the Professional Yoga Therapy model offers a more comprehensive approach to healing the whole person than traditional therapies used alone. As health care providers, we must move beyond the container of a specific pathophysiology and reunite mind, body and spirit in a healing environment which includes the ancient art and science of Yoga.
