Tools for Combating Burnout for Healthcare Professionals

In the four years I have been working through the MTY curriculum, I have had the opportunity to share information that has been the most impactful to my professional practice as a physical therapist. Attached are the scripts and, when applicable, power points for four presentations. Three were presented at the national annual meeting for the American Society of Hand Therapists. Presentations focused on bringing self-care information to physical therapists, occupational therapists and nurses and introducing the audiences to the value of components of yoga (the breath, mindfulness, yoga nidra, and grounding techniques). My person focus with these presentations was to begin to address the burnout I was seeing in my colleagues.

Because of my own experience with professional burnout, theses projects have been healing for me. The journey through the MTY curriculum has given me tools to address my own burnout and opportunity to share with my colleagues. Presenting information in a continuing education format worked well. The first year we included the plenary pause at ASHT, the time was placed in an awkward transition time from breakout sessions to the plenary session. The next year, the time was in the middle of the plenary time when everyone was settled in the room. I was surprised at how well the plenary pause worked in a large meeting room. I was asked to repeat the session the past 3 years due to people commenting on how meaningful it was for them. This made me feel so grateful for my opportunity to experience MTY!
